Search Engine Analysis: The Basics

Publish by: Webmaster Sunday, April 12, 2009

Search engine analysis helps you measure your ranking potential. It does this my not only recognising Meta Tags, it tries to use the same technology that search engine spiders use.

The success of using SEO as your marketing plan lies in being able to attract a lot of traffic to your website. SEO is the process used to improve your websites content so that you are able to increase not only the quantity of traffic, or users, to your site, but also the quality. Users find what they are looking for on the internet via search engines. The success of your product lies in your website being highly visible to search engines, ‘standing out in the crowd’ so to speak.

Analysing your website
Start here. Before you can optimise your website you have to analyse its technical aspects, this is because you need to be able to pinpoint which areas need improvement, if any, and the process on analysis covers many aspects.

Analysing the technical aspects should cover how your website was constructed, and whether your users are able to navigate around it easily or not. Very importantly you need to discover how easy it is for search engine spiders to crawl around so that they can do their indexing.

You also need to analyse your keywords, your current rankings, how your links are functioning and your content. Included in your content analysis you should look at your content, how is it written, does it need improvement and what your current keyword density is.

One important part of your analysis should cover your competitors, who they are, how their Rankings compare to yours, what their web pages contain and how they are constructed. What links they have that may be of benefit to you and are they more successful than you, if they are, what is it they are doing that you aren’t.

Search Engine Algorithms
Another reason for analysing your website is for the benefit of search engines. The main principle behind search engine ranking algorithms is that they calculate your rankings. They also ensure that results shown from searches keep their integrity, that is to say that they are designed to make sure that ranking cannot be tampered with.

You need to see how your anchor text is functioning. Anchor text provides a more accurate description of your web pages than the actual pages do and provide valuable information for ranking algorithms. Anchor texts provide information you need if you are to make judgements and put in place methods of filtering.

Analysing your link structures allows search engines to evaluate the quality of your web pages and a do an analysis on your keyword proximity. You can get top rankings using less competitive keywords simply by increasing your keyword proximity.
If you are to keep growing and stay successful, you need to be informed, in this way you will be able to find newer and easier ways to optimise your website and this will help you improve your customer base and improve traffic to your site.

I was telling you recently how it really helps to think of yourself as implementing an article marketing campaign rather than just writing article by article and seeing how it goes.

You need to take a long term perspective with article marketing (as with any online marketing tool) , and I know that's the area where we struggle–most people want to see results yesterday!

I know it's hard to plug along not knowing where you're going or where you'll end up, and that is why creating an article marketing campaign can make all the difference in your results.

I have been article marketing for years and years, but just last year I started a new campaign that has created tremendous results for my sites. I did something a little different and it really paid off.

I thought it might be helpful to you if I shared exactly what I did so that you can get an idea in your head as to what is possible if you implement an article marketing campaign and stick with it over the long term.

I'm going give you Step 1 today, and this is it:

Establish your website's baseline.
In order to know how you're doing, you need to know where you're staring from. Each month you will measure your results in the following areas, and after several months you'll be able to see definite progress.

This was exactly my first step with my campaign that I started a year ago, and without doing this, I don't think I would have had the success I had over the past year.

It's simple enough–Here is how you determine your website's baseline:

1) What is your website's ranking for each of your keywords?
So, type Keyword #1 into Google.

Where does your site appear in the search engine results listings? Is it #5, #50, or 105–whatever your ranking, make a note of it.

Now, repeat this by doing a search for each of your keywords and see where your site turns up in the rankings.

Then, after you've finished searching in Google, hop on over to Yahoo and do the same searches.

(It's worth it to set up a spreadsheet to track this info.)

2) How many backlinks are coming into your site?
Here's a tutorial on how to do a back link check:

Enter that number in your spreadsheet for both Google and Yahoo (or whichever search engines are important to you).

3) What is your website's PageRank?
PageRank (PR) is the ranking that Google assigns to each page on the internet as a reflection of the website's authority. The ranking scale goes from 0-10, where 10 is the best.

Now, you do not need to achieve a PR10 to be at the top of the search engine rankings for your keywords–you may be able to have a PR of only 2, 3 or 4. So, a super high PR isn't everything, but it is one indicator that can help you track your website's progress.

How do you measure your PR? The Google Toolbar has a PageRank indicator on it. Just download the toolbar, then hover your cursor of the PR indicator, and you'll see the PR of the web page.

4) What is your website's traffic
You probably have some sort of stats tracking system set up with your site that will tell you your website traffic each month–that's what you would use to tell you what your traffic is. Just whatever your website traffic was for the month prior to the month you're currently in, add that to your spreadsheet.

Now–please note: Any one of these indicators may not reveal much. You may be building links and are due for an upgrade in PageRank the next time Google adjusts their rankings, but you won't be able to tell that if you're only measuring website traffic. Remember–there is a delayed reaction in the search engines and with traffic to a site, so that the efforts you exert today in marketing your site will show their results several months from now.

This is why it's so helpful to track multiple stats–you can see changes in some areas while other areas are still trying to catch up.

Here are some FAQs you may have after gathering this information:

When I do searches for my keywords, I see radically different results in Google and Yahoo–why so different?
You may rank highly for one keyword in Google and be completely off the charts in Yahoo, or vice versa. This is not unusual–each search engine has it's own way of measuring results so the results are different. By implementing an article marketing campaign, you can 'even things out'. When I first started my most recent article marketing campaign, my site's rankings in Google were much higher than in Yahoo, but now a year later my site ranks at the top in both search engines.

I can't find my site in the search engine rankings–what does that mean?
That's fine–this is why you're doing article marketing, so that you can jump up the rankings! Everyone has to start somewhere, and if you're just starting to market your site it's not unusual to not see your site listed at all in the rankings when you do a search for your keywords. You are taking steps to change that.

My site has a PageRank of zero–what's up with that?
It could be that your website is brand new–if your site has not yet been indexed by Google, when you do the PageRank check, you will see something like 'no ranking available'. That counts as a PR0. If your site is brand new, you will need to wait for your site to be indexed and for the incoming links to be evaluated, which can take 4+ months.  If your site is not brand new, then likely you are just starting to marketing your site. Don't fret if you have a PR0–PageRank can go up if you build links and market your site!

I know I have backlinks, but none are showing up when I do the search.
Please see this post on When Can I Expect Backlinks To Show Up For My Articles? to understand the reasons why your site may not be showing backlinks yet.

Article Marketing Plan: a Guide?

Publish by: Webmaster

Article Marketing is a excellent way to get free Search engine traffic . The key is having a solid article marketing plan. You need to set a goal of writing and submitting at least one article per week to have any impact on your website traffic. You must follow through and stick to your guns and make sure you publish the number articles you have set in your plan for each month.

My article marketing plan calls for to write and submit 1 article per week for my fishing site, now some weeks I write more, but never less than 1 per week. One article may not sound like a lot but you are building links with these articles that will last a lifetime. Also quality and respectability are strong factors when writing articles. If you don’t have a goal to recognized as a expert in your selected “niche” then don’t bother with article marketing.

Article marketing is not a quick hit traffic generator, This process takes time and your website traffic increases will be over time. There are some ways to jump start your efforts by automation but you need to learn the basics before using these tools. But I can guarantee this traffic will be quality targeted traffic. I have been using article marketing for about two years now and my sales have doubled.

Now let’s get to the meat of my article and look at key steps that are needed to make your article marketing efforts successful.

#1 Identify your “niche” market. Do not waste your time starting to write articles until you have completed this step. The more specific you are when you identify what you want to write about the better success you will have.

#2 Create a keyword , keyword phrase list of at least 50 keyword phrases. These words need to be associated with the “niche” market you have chosen. I do not recommend you start out targeting single keywords, select keyword phrases about your niche that are two and three words in length. Concentrate on using keyword phrases that are two and three words in length. The reason I say this is because writing articles that concentrate using just single keywords are very hard to get listed on search engines. It is much easier to get listed with two and three keyword phrases. If you have a low advertising budget, like most of us, I would like to suggest an excellent free keyword phrase generator that is offered by Google adwords. This service is free and you do not need to deposit any money. Type in a single keyword that is associated with your “niche” market. Adwords will generate a list of two and three keyword phrases for you. Make sure you download or copy this list for future use when you are writing your articles.

#3 Start writing articles that use some of the keyword phrases from your list . Start out writing by inserting your two and three word phrases as you go. One thing about keywords or phrases is that you do not want to repeat the same targeted word or phrase more than once every 100 hundred words. Take for example, if I were writing a article about article marketing and targeting the phrase “ Article Automation” and the length of my article was say 700 words, I would need to make sure this key word phrase was not used more than once every 100 words and no more then 7 times total. There are ways to mix your phrases up to get the same ranking without duplicating your phrases; example instead of using “article automation” you could use “automate articles” and not be penalized by the search engines for excessive keywords. Remember concentrate on the quality of your article when inserting keyword phrase. It’s important that you get the attention of the reader.

#4 Create a list of article directories to submit your article too. There are some steps to this that I recommend you use because all article directories are not created equal. You need to build a list of directories that prioritized by their Google rankings. First thing you need to do is go to Google and type in “article directory” in the search box. The results will give you 1000’nds of sites to use in your list development. There are two sites you must put on your list right now and they are ezinearticles.com and searchwarp.com. I use a free Google ranking tool that is simple to use to locate each sites ranking. Type in the following keyword phrase “website ranking tools for Google” at Google’s search box to find a free ranking tool suitable for you, or just e-mail me and I send the link I use. Just a note when developing a list use sites with rankings of 6,5,4,3 first, these sites will get you some traffic over time.
